How many times have you heard that being successful is
all down to setting goals? It may come as no surprise to
you to learn there is a lot more to success than just
setting your goals.

Most of us, at some time, have been told that an
essential part, if not the major part, of being
successful is setting goals. If that were true many more
of us would be successful millionaires, actors, parents.
In this article I show you why many people fail to
achieve their goals and how to be successful whatever you
want or need.

What Is A Goal

A goal is a target achievable in measurable attainable
steps. It is more than just a desire or a need and has
an existence of its own. A desire or a wish is less
tangible and often just fleeting. Who doesn’t desire or
wish to win the lottery with all its millions in prize
money. Very few would not but, despite the widespread
desire, it is not a goal. A goal is a desire, wish or
need achievable by actions you can take. It is more than
a mere wish or desire.

How To Set A Goal

Setting a goal is a process which starts with an
achievable wish, need or desire. First you must decide
on the following

What do you want?
Where do you want to be?
Your status, career or qualifications?

A goal can relate to any desire, wish or need achievable
by actions you can take.

You then break down the goal into small individual steps
or actions. Achievable goals are goals where you can
influence their realization and measure your progress
towards them. Achieving long-term life changing goals is
a process of achieving, step by step, short and medium
term actions.

What Actions Are Required

Goals require action on your part. You first need to
decide what action is required to achieve the goal. Your
first action is always to always write your goals down.
Putting pen to paper, and this is one time when a real
pen and paper are required, gives your goals an existence
of their own.

Writing a plan is an essential step in achieving your
goals. Without it you will, over time, amend the long
term goal to fit your reality. You will eventually reduce
the goal to a wish, and wishes only come true by chance.

Analyze The Results

You then need to analyze and work out in detail, how you
are going to accomplish each individual goal. This means
writing a detailed plan of what tangible actions are
required to achieve each individual goal.

These actions then become smaller shorter term goals
leading to major longer term goals.

What Steps Do I Need To Take Today

Every day ask yourself “What steps do I need to take
today?”. By now it should be all planned in advance so
check your plan and make sure you take each step every
day. If you discover additional steps are needed add
them to the plan.

Review Your Achievements Every Week And Month

Every week review your progress for the week. Check what
you’ve done and what you may have missed. Adjust your
plan for the next week or month.

Your plan should always take into account what you will
do today, tomorrow, this week, next week before the end
of the month, in the next 3 months, 6 months? Always
write down your results.

What If Things Go Wrong

If goals were easy to achieve everyone would be
successful millionaires. Goals are difficult because they
move you outside your comfort zone to do things
differently. To be successful you have to face your own
fear of failure and take risks. There will be setbacks,
expect them, they are part of the process.

If you are not prepared to take action towards your goals
then you are wasting your time. True success comes from
the daily actions we all take. Using goals ensures that
all the actions you take are moving you in the direction
you wish to go. Daily or weekly reviews keep you on track
and applying these simple tips will ensure you achieve
your goals

Goal setting is the true secret to success in any area of
life. But although setting a goal may seem simple,
achieving it is usually another question altogether.

Why is that?

Because you will never achieve your goals unless you know
exactly what you want, are passionate about your goal
and have a solid, realistic plan of action. This is what
marks the difference between nebulous dreams and wishes
and truly achievable goals!

Many obstacles and challenges will fly right in your face
when you’re going after a goal. Here are 5 time-tested
methods that will help get the success you deserve.

Know Exactly What Your Goal Is

Your first job is to discover exactly what your goal is.
What will achieving that goal really look like? Be as
specific as possible about exactly what your desired end
result is. Your success will be a measure of your clarity,
since an achievable goal plan cannot be created around a
nebulous dream.

If your goal is to create a more successful business,
what will that look like? Are you thinking in terms of
simply hiring someone else to give you more free time?
Are you looking for a very specific monthly profit? Or
can your goal be best expressed in terms of a certain
lifestyle?

Regardless of what you want, the best way to get it is to
first clarify exactly what you want in as much detail as
possible. This can be hard work. But without a clear
mental picture, you’ll never have the focus required to
achieve your goal.

Be Willing to Pay the Entry Fee

Success takes dedicated planning and effort. In a way
it’s like building a house. In the beginning all you
have is a rough concept. Then you develop a complete set
of plans and you immediately move closer to success.
The same is true of creating a better lifestyle, or a
more successful business.

But there’s always an entry fee to be paid for success.

The entry fee?

Creating more success in your business may mean less
recreational time. Writing your own book may require
less TV. Being closer to your children may require
adjusting your work or social activities.

It’s the full glass deal. If your life (your time) is
already full to the top, there’s no room for something
new. The entry fee is carving out the time to create
that something new.

Focus On Your Goal Every Day

I’m sure you probably want to achieve your goal as fast
as possible. That’s why clear mental focus is so very
important.

Consistent daily focus is absolutely necessary to burn
in the new neural pathways you need to create your new
goal. Without daily focus, the old mental habits that
have kept you from your goal will continue to take over.

This happens automatically, since these old habits replay
24/7 deep in your subconscious mind. The only way to
override subconscious anti-success messages is to
consciously focus on what you DO want and build new
neural networks!

That’s why success is an everyday event.

Re-commit to your goal every day. Don’t let your goal
take a back seat to the daily tasks and distractions that
will try to take over. Life will try to get in your way.
Just get and stay on course every day. Focus on your
goal and on success!

Get Passionate

One of the most powerful tools in your success tool box
is having real passion for your goal.

Why passion?

Because intense passionate desire for your goal will help
you burn in those new neural pathways even faster. Many,
many scientific studies have shown that intense emotion
(passion) is a key success tool.

PLUS (and this is really a *big* plus), intense passion
will also help you rapidly override any inappropriate
old “failure messages” stored in your subconscious mind.

Take Consistent Action

In many ways, actually taking action can be the most
difficult step. Successful goal achievement is built by
taking one small action after another.

The word is ACTION!

If you commit to take at least one small action each day,
your actions will add up and make a difference. So avoid
sitting back waiting for that big second when everything
will magically “just happen.”

You CAN create whatever you want in life. The secret is
to determine exactly what you want, then pursue it
passionately. But remember — in the end, only action
counts! You can’t just dream about it! You have to DO
IT!

Setting goals is a skill that everyone who wishes to be
successful should learn and master. However many people
often set the wrong types of goals, and as a result either
do not achieve what they really want to do in life, or give
up on their goals because they do not become motivated by
them.

It is therefore absolutely essential that the goals you set
for yourself are aligned with your basic values.

What Are Your Basic Values

Your basic values are the things that you believe in, you are
passionate about and what you regard as important. They are
who you are and what you stand for. For example, if honesty
and fairness is something you value as a person, your goals
and future actions should be aligned with these values. Such
as making money, in a way that is fair and honest, without
cheating or harming people.

Taking the time to think about your basic values is an extremely
important thing to do, as if you set goals that are not aligned
with what you believe in or stand for, will in a lack of
motivation and a feeling that you are not doing the right thing.

So if you strongly value honesty and fairness in life but then
try to make money using dishonest means you are likely to feel
bad about doing so and consequently will lack the motivation to
successfully go after and achieve your goals. If you do not enjoy
what you are doing, then it is highly unlikely you will become
successful at it and this is why it is so important to choose the
goals that are right for you.

Another important consideration to make when setting goals is
whether or not they challenge you. If the goals you are setting
do not stretch you and pull you outside your comfort zone, then
you are unlikely to feel motivated and driven to achieve them.
However, goals should not be too challenging or unrealistic as
otherwise they will seem impossible to accomplish and you will
most likely give up on them.

This does not mean to say that you should not think big. What
may seem possible for one person, may seem completely impossible
to another. So the goals you set should be based on what you
realistically believe you can achieve. This last point raises
another important issue, as often people set goals which are
influenced by what other people think. For example, many people
believe flying was an impossible task and something which could
never be done.

However, the Wright brothers did not believe flying was impossible
and as a result went onto create the worlds first flying airplane.
If the Wright brothers had allowed other people’s limiting beliefs
to influence the goals they set for themselves, who knows, maybe
we would not have airplanes today.

So when setting yourself goals make sure they are the things that
you really want to do in life, and are aligned with what you
believe in and believe you can achieve. If you can do this you
will set goals that are right for you, and vastly increase the
chances you will accomplish them.

When we first begin working toward a goal, we are filled
with passion, fire and excitement. We feel invincible and
we just know that we can accomplish whatever we desire.
We take off running toward our goal, determined to make it
happen, and we know we CAN make it happen.

Then we begin to encounter some obstacles. We may struggle
through a few of them, but then we begin making excuses for
not working on our goals. Perhaps we lose interest and get
overwhelmed with daily activities. Before we know it, our
goal has been placed on the “back burner” and we are no
longer working toward it. Worse, maybe we no longer believe
that we CAN make our dreams a reality. What happened?
In my own experience, there are four key ingredients to
making your dreams come true.

Why – What is your reason for wanting this particular goal?
Let’s say your goal is to buy a house. Ask yourself why you
want that. Your answer may be something along the lines of,
“Because I want to own my own property rather than paying
rent for the rest of my life.” Okay good. But why? What
does it matter if you own your own property or pay rent?
Your answer might now be, “Because I want to have the
house paid off by the time I retire, so I don’t have to
worry about paying rent or a mortgage payment on a fixed
income.” Great! But why? What will that do for you? Keep
asking yourself WHY, and writing down your answers until
you get to the “meat” of your desire. Once you have a clear
desire in mind . . .

Believe You Deserve It – many of us struggle with low self-
esteem and at a core level, we don’t feel we deserve success
and abundance. Guess what? If we don’t believe we deserve it,
we will resist it when it arrives. We may do this unconsciously
by sabotaging our own efforts, or we may outright refuse to even
try. We must first understand and then truly believe that we DO
deserve success and abundance. In addition, we must be willing
to receive it. We’re so good at giving to others, but many of us
won’t accept help or blessings for ourselves. We feel it is better
to give than to receive, and in some ways it is. However, that
doesn’t mean we shouldn’t receive at all. Be willing to believe
that you deserve to be successful and happy. Then be willing to
accept that abundance when it arrives. Affirm aloud to the
universe each day, “I joyfully accept all of the abundance and
happiness the universe has for me, NOW.”

Step by Step – If your goal is to buy a house, you likely have
a lot of smaller goals that must be accomplished first. You will
need to build up a savings for the down payment. You may need
to clean up your credit report and pay down existing debt. You
will need to see if you qualify for a mortgage loan. Always keep
your ultimate goal in mind, but focus on the smaller steps that
will get you there first. If I wanted to drive to California, I’d
have to pay attention to the route I need to take to get there,
not just the destination. Write out a list of the smaller steps
that will help you reach your goal, and then begin working on them
one at a time. Don’t overwhelm yourself by thinking only of that
big, shining vision of the completed project.

No Matter What – Decide that you will do this, no matter what.
No matter what obstacles come up, no matter if your desire and
determinations begin to fade. True success comes to those who
just won’t give up. Make a promise to yourself that you will
continue working toward your goals no matter what happens.
Write this promise out and put it somewhere you will see it.
Read it aloud to yourself every single day.

Keep reminding yourself that nothing will change unless you change
it. Fuel your determination with positive thoughts and keep moving
forward. If obstacles come up, find a way around them. If there is
absolutely no way around a particular obstacle, switch your focus
and begin working on another aspect of your goals. Many times
obstacles will fade away if given enough time, or sometimes a
solution presents itself when we least expect it. Let your
determination glow hot and bright, and burn away all doubts
and fears. Know that you can do it, and you will.
