The ability to connect with people is essential to
success in any business. Professional networking events
present opportunities to interact with others on a
personal level and to develop profitable relationships.
These occasions are critical for anyone who wants to grow
a business or promote a career.

Many people are simply not comfortable walking into a
room full of strangers and striking up conversations.
Here are five common stumbling blocks that you may face
and tips to help you overcome them.

A Reluctance To Talk To Strangers

You were taught at an early age not to speak to people
you don’t know. It’s not safe. In certain situations
today this is still good advice. In business, however,
talking to strangers is a way to generate interest and
support for your products and services. If you only talk
to the people you already know, you will miss out on
opportunities to make new connections and establish
valuable contacts.

To get past your discomfort in talking to strangers, set
a goal for yourself before you attend any networking
event. Decide how many new contacts you want to make or
how many strangers you want to meet. In some cases, you
may specifically target individuals whom you’d like to
know.

Next come up with some icebreakers or conversation
starters. Have questions prepared that you can ask
anyone you meet at the event. You may want to inquire
about other people’s business, their connection to the
sponsoring organization or their opinion of the venue.

Lack Of A Formal Introduction

It’s much easier to make a new contact when there is
someone else to handle the introduction and pave the way.
If you wait for another person to make the move you may
not meet anyone. At networking events, the goal is to
meet as many people as possible.

This is the time to take the bull by the horns, walk up
to people you don’t know, introduce yourself and start a
conversation. You can do this if you have prepared your
self-introduction in advance.

You will not introduce yourself the same way on every
occasion. Perhaps it is your first time to attend an
association meeting. In that case, you might want to
say that as part of your introduction. Let people know
who you are, why you are there and give them a reason
to ask more about you.

Fear Of Being Seen As Pushy

You may think that you will turn people off if you are
assertive and that if they want to talk to you, they will
make the first move. If this is your line of thinking you
will find yourself spending your time alone at the
reception or meeting function and leaving without a
single new connection. Being open, friendly and
interested does not turn people off.

You will not come across as overly aggressive if you seek
out the “approachable” people. These are the ones who are
standing alone or who are speaking in groups of three or
more. Two people talking to each other are not
approachable because they may be having a private
conversation and you would be interrupting.

Thinking That Other People May Not Like You

There is always the risk that the other person is not
interested in you and doesn’t want to meet or talk to
you. It happens. If that is the case, don’t take it
personally. Nothing ventured is nothing gained. When you
get a cold shoulder, smile, move on and say to yourself,
“Next?”

Having Your Intentions Misunderstood

Approaching someone of the opposite sex to begin a
conversation may seem more like flirting than networking.
This is more of an issue for women than men. Women have
an equal place in the work arena and need to make
professional connections the same as men do. Women in
business can no longer afford to hold back when there is
opportunity at hand.

Neither men nor women will have their motives
misinterpreted if they present themselves professionally
in their attire and if they keep the conversation focused
on business issues or topics that are not personal or
private.

Whatever your stumbling blocks, face them before the next
networking event and devise a personal plan for getting
past them. Once you do, you will find yourself connecting
with confidence and courtesy on every occasion and the
results will be reflected in your bottom line.

Everyone, at some point of his or her life, has dreamed
of being somebody special, somebody big. Who hasn’t
fantasized about being the one who hits the game-winning
homer? Who hasn’t dreamed of being the homecoming queen?
And how many times have we dreamed of being rich, or
successful, or happy with our relationships?

Often, we dream big dreams and have great aspirations.
Unfortunately, our dreams remain just that dreams. And
our aspirations easily collect dust in our attic.

This is a sad turn of events in our life. Instead of
experiencing exciting adventures in self actualization,
we get caught up in the humdrum of living from day-to-day
just barely existing.

But you know what? Life could be so much better, if only
we learned to aim higher.

The most common problem to setting goals is the word
impossible. Most people get hung up thinking I can’t do
this. It’s too hard. It’s too impossible. No one can do
this.

However, if everyone thought that, there would be no
inventions, no innovations and no breakthroughs in human
accomplishment.

Remember that scientists were baffled when they took a
look at the humble bumblebee. Theoretically, they said,
it was impossible for the bumblebee to fly. Unfortunately
for the bumblebee, no one has told it so. So fly it does.

On the other hand, some people suffer from dreaming
totally outrageous dreams and not acting on them. The
result? Broken dreams and tattered aspirations.

If you limit yourself with self-doubt and self-limiting
assumptions, you will never be able to break past what
you deem impossible. If you reach to far out into the
sky without working towards your goal, you will find
yourself clinging on to the impossible dream.

Try this exercise. Take a piece of paper and write down
some goals in your life. Under one header, list down
things you know you can do. Under another header, write
the things you might be able to do. And under one more,
list the things that are impossible for you to do.

Now look at all the headers strive every day to
accomplish the goals that are under things you know you
can do. Check them when you are able to accomplish them.
As you slowly are able to check all of your goals under
that heading, try accomplishing the goals under the other
header, the one that reads you might be able to do.

As of the items you wrote under things I could do are
accomplished, you can move the goals that are under
things that are impossible for you to do to the list of
things you might be able to do.

As you iterate through this process, you will find out
that the goals you thought were impossible become easier
to accomplish. And the impossible begin to seem possible
after all.

You see, the technique here is not to limit your
imagination. It is to aim high and start working towards
that goal little by little. However, it also is unwise to
set a goal that is truly unrealistic.

Those who just dream towards a goal without working hard
end up disappointed and disillusioned.

On the other hand, if you told someone a hundred years
ago that it was possible for man to be on the moon, they
would laugh at you. If you had told them that you could
send mail from here to the other side of the world in a
few seconds, they would say you were out of your mind.
But, through sheer desire and perseverance, these
impossible dreams are now realities.

Thomas Edison once said that genius is 1% inspiration and
99% perspiration. Nothing could be truer. For one to
accomplish his or her dreams, there has to be had work
and discipline. But take note that 1% has to be a
think-big dream and not some easily accomplished one.

Ask any gym rat and he or she will tell you that there
can be no gains unless you are put out of your comfort
zone. Remember the saying, No pain, no gain? That is as
true as it can be.

So dream on, my friend! Don’t get caught up with your
perceived limitations. Think big and work hard to attain
those dreams. As you step up the ladder of progress, you
will just about find out that the impossible has just
become a little bit more possible.

The media is a powerful thing. The average person spends
an enormous amount of their life consuming it in one form
or another and will spend a significant percentage of
that time looking at, listening to or watching
advertisements. If you want to use the power of the
media, though, you need to know what you’re doing.

Advertising In Newspapers And Magazines

There are two kinds of advertising you can get in
newspapers and magazines: classified and display.
Classifieds are the small ads towards the back of the
publication, while display ads can be almost any size,
from a small corner of a page to a massive double-page
spread.

If there’s a publication you’re interested in advertising
in, either go to its website (the rate card section) or
call its advertising department to find out the rates it
charges. Now pick your jaw up off the floor. Yes,
advertising in the print media really is that expensive,
and for most home businesses it probably just won’t be
that economical.

There is, however, an exception: niche and trade
magazines. If you’ve ever looked around in a news agent,
you will have seen just how many magazines there are out
there, filling every conceivable gap in the market. You
need to find the magazine that people who are interested
in your services might read. For example, if you’re a
wedding photographer, look for a magazine called ‘Your
Wedding’, ‘Bride’, or something similar. Advertising in
these magazines will be far cheaper than placing an ad
in a general-audience publication and far more likely
to actually get some responses.

Advertising On The Radio

Wherever you are, the chances are that there’s a local
radio station. Once your home business grows to a decent
size, you might consider buying some time on it.

Really, though, the only kind of home business that can
benefit enough from radio ads to justify the cost is one
that does anything to do with cars. Since radio is
almost entirely limited to use as in-car entertainment
now, you know that almost everyone your ad reaches will
be a car-owner and so might be interested in what you’re
offering. If you offer something that people need cheaply
or even for free, you can get a big response.

Unfortunately, that response could be a little to big,
thanks to the time-sensitivity of radio, you’ll get
mobbed the next day and then everyone will forget you
again. Radio advertising offers the listener no
opportunity to keep your ad and refer to it later, or to
find it again in the future. You will find that any ads
involving a phone number are spectacularly useless.

Advertising On The Television

Unless your business is getting pretty big, this would be
quite a bad idea. You’d have trouble producing and airing
an ad even on local cable channels for less than $10,000.
Of course, if there’s a market for your product and
you’ve got the budget for this, you could take a gamble
and make a mint. The home businesses that tend to do best
out of TV ads are ones that have a ‘unique and useful
invention’ product with easy-to-demonstrate benefits,
think infomercial. Research shows that you can sell almost
anything given a 60-second ad, a free phone number and a
price point of $19.95.

Advertising On Billboards

Here’s one that gets overlooked pretty often, but can be
very effective if you do it right. Billboard ads are
relatively expensive, but they do generally stay up for
a long time and they can be very specifically targeted
to an area, the one where they’re physically located.
You’ll have the best results with this if you can put
one near enough to your business that it could say turn
left at the next junction, or something like that. Phone
numbers are, again, pretty useless, although you could
have some luck putting a website address up there.

Advertising At The Movies.

Finally, here’s one that often gets overlooked. If you
turn up to the cinema early, you might have seen that
before the big-budget ads, ads for local businesses
are run. This can be a great place to advertise
relatively inexpensively in quite a high-profile way,
and it works especially well for takeaway food
businesses.

It’s a talent that everyone has, yet they think they
don’t. The power of innovation. If you’ve ever marveled
at somebody’s creative prowess, guess what, you can
create and innovate too. It just takes time. Everyone is
born creative. The box of crayons in kindergarten were
not limited to those who possessed potential because the
truth is, everybody has potential.

You know how long it took to learn to ride a bike or
drive or to never commit the same mistake again? It’s the
same with innovation. It takes a bit of practice and a
lot of time before this mind function comes easily when
called. This article will teach you a few tips on how to
bring innovation into your life.

Don’t listen to what other people say. Follow the beat of
your own drum. Allowing for the input of other people
will only bring cacophony to the music you are trying to
make. If you have an original idea, don’t waste your time
and effort trying to make people understand. They won’t.
And the help you will probably get comes in the form of
negative feedback. If all those geniuses listened to their
peers, we would probably still be living in the middle
ages.

Spend time on it. I cannot stress that enough, although,
please do not mistake this tip to tell you to quit your
day job entirely. Do not. This involves some tricky time
management but with a little discipline you’ll be able to
squeeze both in.

Exercise, take a walk or run a mile or two. Send all those
endorphins coursing through your veins. Exercising
certainly clears and relaxes your mind and allows for
anything to pop up.

Record your dreams. Aren’t some of them just the craziest
things that your conscious mind would never have thought
of? If you’ve had these dreams before and I’m sure have,
this only shows you the untapped innovative power you
have lying within. So jot down those notes. Those dreams
may just create an innovative spark in you.

Find your own style. You can always tell a Van Gogh from
a Matisse. You’ll know Hemingway wrote something by the
choice of words on the paper. So it is the same with you.
People will appreciate your innovation more because it is
uniquely yours and that no one else would have thought of
what you were thinking. That will let people see how
valuable an asset you are.

Don’t hide behind nifty gadgets or tools. You don’t need
the most expensive set of paints to produce a
masterpiece. The same way with writing. You don’t need
some expensive fountain pen and really smooth paper for a
bestseller. In fact, J.K. Rowling wrote the first book of
the Harry Potter Series on bits of tissue. So what if
you’ve got an expensive SLR camera if you’re a crappy
photographer? Who cares if you’ve got a blinging laptop
if you can’t write at all? The artist actually reduces
the number of tools he has as he gets better at his
craft. He knows what works and what doesn’t.

Nothing will work without passion. What wakes you up in
the mornings? What keeps the flame burning? What is the
one thing that you’ll die if you don’t do? Sometimes
people with talent are overtaken by the people who want
it more. Think the hare and the tortoise. Ellen Degeneres
once said that if you’re not doing something that you
want to do, then you don’t really want to do it. And
that’s true. Sometimes you just want something so bad you
become a virtual unstoppable. And that is passion.
Passion will keep you going.

Don’t worry about inspiration. You can’t force it.
Inspiration hits when you least expect it to, for those
unpredictable yet inevitable moments you should prepare.
An idea could strike you on the subway, yet alas, you
poor unfortunate soul, you have no sheet of paper to
scribble down a thought that could change the world.
Avoid these disasters. Have a pen and paper within your
arm’s reach at all times.

I hope this article has helped you bring more innovation
into your life. Keep in mind that you’re doing these
things for your own satisfaction and not anybody else’s.
But soon enough they will notice and everything should
snowball from there.

wait for the search engine traffic to come?

As a matter of fact there is. Yet this particular form

simple. Remember to mind your manners. Be polite and
friendly and always maintain the presence of the
Business Professional that you are. When the time is
right, simply ask them to look at your site. You’ll
receive a pretty good cross-section of positive and
critical comments. Don’t go getting your shorts all in a
knot because someone has posted, what appears to you to
be, a negative comment. Keep in mind that you’ve enlisted
them to critique your site. Be prepared for all the
comments. On a whole, the folks in these forums want to
help. However, from time to time you may run into those
that seem to have nothing good to say about anything or
anybody. Take all comments “Buffet Style.” Take what you
want and leave the rest.

Initially you may want to go look at one or two other
members sites and supply some feedback before asking to
have yours looked at. This will give you valuable
insight. What you may find wrong with someone elses site,
you can apply it to your own and make the necessary
changes. When looking for a site to be looked at, look
for the post who has little or no responses to it. By
responding to their post they’re likely to express their
gratitude by visiting your site when you ask in your
post. This technique may seem a bit sly but nonetheless
effective. Just don’t get in the habit of operating in
this manner.

You will not get a ton of traffic from forums but you
will have engaged in an effective form of site promotion
and all forms of site promotion need to be entered into
the mix. As has been said by someone other than myself,
“You don’t need to get it right, You just need to get it
going.” By applying the above you will have “Indeed Got
It Going!”

Forums are a great place to make new friends and interact
with those that are trying to accomplish pretty much the
same things we are. So keep things rolling right along by
“Posting to Forums!”
